How football came to Brazil

Charles Miller playing football for his school in Southampton

European first sailors and railway workers brought ‘the beautiful game’ to the coast of Brazil. They played on the beaches and locals began to do the same.

Charles Miller is sometimes called ‘the father of Brazilian football. Miller was born in São Paulo but educated in England. There he played football against the original Corinthians and St Mary’s FC (now Southampton FC).

In 1894 Charles Miller sailed to Brazil. In his luggage were two footballs – and a copy of the FA rules. With these tools he built the first Brazilian football club.
