April Fool

English language learning materials for students & teachers: CEF language level: A2

April 1st is called April Fool’s Day in the English-speaking world. It is a day when people play jokes.

There are always false stories in the media, but an April Fool’s hoax must happen before midday.

Spaghetti Trees?

A famous example of an April Fool hoax was when the BBC broadcast a story about ‘spaghetti trees’.

‘There’s nothing like real, home-grown spaghetti.’

In most countries, April Fool’s jokes usually happen before midday. In France, for example, you have ‘April Fish’. Children try to pin paper fish on to each other secretly.

Nobody knows how April Fool’s Day started. Perhaps it was to celebrate the start of spring.
