“This is Mr. Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Watson,” said Stamford, introducing us.
“How are you?” he said, gripping my hand strongly. “You have been in Afghanistan, I see.”
“How on earth did you know that?” I asked in astonishment.

Doctor Watson has returned to London after service as an army doctor in the Second Anglo-Afghan War. He is trying to ‘find comfortable rooms at a reasonable price.”

An old friend from medical school suggests “a fellow who is working at the chemical laboratory up at the hospital. He had found some nice rooms and needs someone to share the cost”. The name of this ‘fellow’ is Sherlock Holmes and the address of the ‘nice rooms’ is 221 Baker Street.
